Having a pool in your house’s yard is a spoil of healthy lifestyle and affluence, that is why everything related to constructing and maintaining a pool costs a lot.

To construct a pool, an ideal place should be chosen where within a few days a ground excavation for the hole is performed, a drainage system and pool technology shafts are set, exterior walls are formed, steel frame is installed and the floor is flooded with concrete, and then with the formwork boards inner walls and steps of the future pool are formed and flooded with concrete. These stages of pool construction are compulsory, and there is no reasonable alternative to it.

After the concrete construction is formed and set, the pool owner faces the issue of waterproofing and finishing. This is the most expensive, laborious and critical part of pool construction, which further will either simplify or complicate the process of keeping and maintaining the pool.

Modern market of personal or commercial pool construction offers two technologies of pool waterproofing and finishing: archaic tiling the pool, or applying a PVC liner.

Tiling the pool with tiles or mosaics

Tiling the pool is a complicated and critical process having some preparatory stages.

• Complicated and costly repair. When the waterproof coating is damaged, moisture penetrates under tile bonding adhesive and peels it off the concrete. When pool water leakage or tile buckling and popping off are identified, it is necessary to completely drain the water, dry the basin, and then thoroughly tap all the tiles around the perimeter in order to find all cavities that appeared between tiles and concrete. In case cavities are found, it is necessary to remove the tiles and underlying substrate down to the concrete, restore the waterproofing and plaster, lay new tiles, grout the joints. To maintain the pool you should keep a few boxes of tiles from the same batch that the one your pool is tiled with. After repair, the pool should be kept dry for no less than a week.
• Difficult maintenance of a tiled pool. Depending on the water hardness, over time some lime scale builds up on the tiles, in which microorganisms, algae and many others develop. Lime strongly adheres to the walls and floor of the pool, especially to the joints between tiles. There are several ways and devices to remove lime from the tiles. Many people try to clean the tiles without draining the water, but because of the porous grout in joints between tiles this is impossible. To achieve the best results in removing lime scale from pool tiles, you should drain the water completely, apply special chemicals after drying and brush the joints until clean. Because of their porous structure, it is very difficult to clean the joints completely.

Installing PVC Liner in a Swimming Pool

Finishing the pool with liner is a modern, practical and cost-efficient variant that requires less preparatory processes, less money, is quicker to install and operate compared to tiling.

• The pool lining is easily damaged with sharp objects.
• When in use, the lining rubs against the concrete basin wearing down quite quickly. To reduce rubbing and increase the useful life of the lining, a geotextile padding is installed along the perimeter of the pool, that adds on costs.
• The seams between plates of liner often separate and lose their leak-tightness. Each seam is additionally treated with sealant, and this procedure should be repeated from time to time.
• Overlapping joints scattered all over the pool are very distinctive under water and spoil the aesthetics.
• Overspend of vinyl lining at installing because of very many cut-offs
• Complexity of installing the liner on rounded shapes and steps, precise work is required to install the coping track and cut the lining
• PVC pool lining color is originally grey, the tiling print or solid color is applied to its surface with a special printer. Depending on the quality of the lining, the cases of fading of the pattern or fill color above water line, or their oxidation under water are not uncommon, resulting in a significant difference between above and under water color of pool lining noticeable already on the second year of use.
• Within 2-3 years PVC liner wears and tears, and fades, reducing pool’s attractiveness.
• With the temperature of lower than -20°С, the lining tends to destroy, thus the need to winterize the pool arises.
• When exposed to chlorine, within the first week the lining color fades, and during the second week irreversible destructive processes start.

If the groundwater is close to the surface in the yard with swimming pool, you will have to reject the PVC lining. The groundwater will saturate through the concrete and fill the space between lining and concrete, and this will quickly destroy the concrete and the pool in general.

Let’s review the process of waterproofing application using the example of pool creating.

Once the concrete basin cured, one can start finishing the pool.

• The first step is a thorough cleaning of the concrete basin from construction debris and cement dust.
• The material should be thoroughly mixed with a mixer before application.
• For the first coating it is recommended to thin Aqua with brand solvent in the ratio of 2 to 1, in order for the material to penetrate concrete to maximum depth.
• Aqua polymer is applied with a roller or spray gun. If the surface is even, and the area is large, a roller will do better. When choosing a roller, attention should be paid to the material the roller cover is made of. It is compulsory that the cover is natural, solvent-resistant, and with a low pile. In case of a spray gun, it is recommended to choose an HVLP electric spray gun with a nozzle of 2 to 3 mm. Most often a spray gun is used at waterproofing complex shapes, e.g., a quarry stoned pool.
• Begin painting with the walls, the first thinned coat is thoroughly worked in concrete with the roller. In case of applying with a spray gun, a thinned material should be applied in two coats, both being almost runny.
• When applied with a roller, Aqua is applied from bottom to top, overlapping. Having applied one path of Aqua, you lap a new path 50% over the preceding one. Overlapping application prevents you from missing spots, and creates a reliable even coating.
• Given the priming coat half an hour to dry, one can start applying main coats. Depending on the weather conditions and air temperature, a polymer coat dries within the timeframe of 20 to 40 minutes. Recommended temperature is from 20°C to 30°C.
• Dempinox Aqua recommended consumption is one liter per one square meter. The number of coatings depends upon the application method.
• Each new coating is applied in 20-40 minutes after a preceding one. The time of cure depends upon the air temperature – the higher the temperature, the sooner Aqua dries. It is not recommended to heat Aqua to speed up curing.
• Once a stated amount of material is applied to the walls, let’s paint the floor surface. Start from cove joints. Having painted a few times all inner corners, start rolling the material onto the pool floor coat by coat. The consumption is the same as before – one liter per one square meter of the pool floor. Apply Dempinox in the direction from the far wall towards steps.
• Having applied enough Aqua to the floor and walls, move on to the steps. Specialists recommend that Aqua is applied first to all the corners and protruding parts of steps, and then to the surface of entire stairs. Aqua consumption for steps is 1.5 liter per 1 square meter.
• After each stage of painting the pool, one should closely examine the entire surface covered to make sure no spots are missed. If detected, a missed spot should be touched up.
• Aqua tack-free time is half an hour, but complete polymerization (curing, gaining strength) takes seven days. It is recommended to avoid filling pool with water during this time.

Decorating the pool

Dempinox easily copes with the task of applying floor marks and lane dividing lines. To apply marking, you will need Aqua of the proper color, e.g., dark blue, as well as masking tape and a roller. Measure and mark the places of the future lane lines, their shape, width, and number. Line the contour of future lane lines with a masking tape. Apply Aqua with a roller until the main color does not show through. Having applied the final coat, the tape should be removed right after, when the lines are still wet. The pool is fully functional in 24 hours.

Company’s logo on the floor or wall of the commercial pool is a must-have for the successful business. To apply a logo with Aqua one needs a stencil and masking tape. Secure a stencil with masking tape to a chosen spot in the pool, and then carefully apply Aqua with a roller. The stencil is taken off right after painting, while the final coat is still wet. Once applied, the logo becomes solid with the main coating of the pool.

Fixing Aqua polymer coating

Dempinox Aqua creates an impact-resistant elastic coating deeply penetrating the concrete and becoming integral with it. In case one still managed to damage the coating, fixing it up is very simple.

• It is necessary to drain water from the pool down to the damaged spot, and let the spot dry. 
• Apply Aqua polymer to a damaged spot with a roller or brush in 5-6 coats. The material applied adheres to the main film restoring the integrity of the seamless coating. The fixed spot remains unnoticeable.  
• In 24 hours the pool can be filled with water and its use resumed.
